Dental Crowns
A crown, sometimes referred to as a cap, is used to restore and enhance teeth that are heavily damaged. A tooth-shaped “cap” is placed over the base of a tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. The crown fully covers the visible portion of the tooth above the gum line.
Why would a crown be used?
- To protect a weak tooth damaged by decay or trauma
- To restore an already broken tooth
- To provide support to a tooth with a very large filling when there isn’t a lot of the tooth left
- To hold and support a dental bridge
- To make cosmetic modifications
- To protect a tooth that had a RCT (Root Canal Treatment)
- To cover a dental implant
There are several options available for the material your crown is made of including porcelain, porcelain fused with metal, gold, and zirconia. Talk Dr. Siegel or Dr. Dolt to determine which is best for your treatment.
What to expect during your crown procedure?
Placing a crown generally takes two office visits but at Siegel and Dolt, we offer one-visit, same-day Cerec Crowns. Your first visit will be to prepare your tooth. After a thorough examination of the tooth to ensure if it can support a crown, the tooth will be filed down to make room for the crown to be placed over it. In severe decay or damage cases, the tooth may need to be filled in to provide the crown a stable base to be placed on (often known as a build-up), sometimes you will need to use posts in order to support the build-up and increase the strength and longevity of the crown.
Using 3D imaging and digital technology, our dentists will take an optical scan of your tooth and while chairside, custom design your new crown. The optical scan is then used to robotically mill your new crown built to exact specifications and without the need for multiple visits.
Once your new crown is ready, Dr. Siegel or Dr. Dolt will place your new permanent crown and finalize its fit and functionality. So, when life happens and you crack a tooth or have a dental emergency, Siegel and Dolt are prepared to care for you using the latest-technology available.
